Sunil Chhetri, born on August 3, 1984, is a prominent Indian professional footballer who plays as a forward. He captains both the Bengaluru FC club in the Indian Super League (ISL) and the Indian national football team. Known for his excellent link-up play, goal-scoring ability, and leadership on the field, Chhetri is one of the top international goal scorers among active players, ranking third, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. He is also the all-time leading scorer and the most-capped player for the India national team.
Chhetri began his professional career in 2002 with Mohun Bagan, one of India’s most famous football clubs. He then moved to JCT, where he scored 21 goals in 48 matches. During the 59th Santosh Trophy, held in Delhi, he scored six goals, including a hat-trick against Gujarat. Despite Delhi’s loss to Kerala in the quarter-finals, Chhetri scored in that match as well.
In 2010, Chhetri made a significant move to Major League Soccer (MLS) by joining the Kansas City Wizards, becoming one of the first players from South Asia to play abroad. After his stint in the MLS, he returned to India’s I-League, playing for Chirag United and Mohun Bagan. He then went abroad again to join Sporting CP in Portugal’s Primeira Liga, where he played for the club’s reserve side.
Chhetri has been instrumental in India’s international successes, helping the national team win the Nehru Cup in 2007, 2009, and 2012, as well as the SAFF Championship in 2011, 2015, and 2021. He also played a crucial role in India’s victory in the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup, which qualified India for their first AFC Asian Cup in 27 years. Chhetri scored twice in the final tournament of the 2011 AFC Asian Cup.
Throughout his career, Chhetri has received numerous awards, including being named AIFF Player of the Year a record seven times in 2007, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018–19, and 2021–22. He was honored with the Arjuna Award in 2011 for his exceptional sporting achievements and the Padma Shri in 2019, India’s fourth-highest civilian award. In 2021, he was awarded the Khel Ratna Award, India’s highest sporting honor, becoming the first footballer to receive this prestigious award.
