Neeraj Chopra, born on December 24, 1997, in Khandra village near Panipat, Haryana, is a prominent name in javelin throw. He comes from a farming family; his father, Satish Kumar, is a farmer, and his mother, Saroj Devi, is a housewife. Neeraj has two sisters.
Neeraj’s interest in javelin throw began when he was just 11 years old. He was inspired after meeting Jaiveer (also known as Jai Choudhary), a javelin athlete who trained at Panipat Stadium and represented Haryana. Impressed by Neeraj’s natural talent, having thrown the javelin 40 meters without any formal training, Jaiveer became his first coach. Neeraj trained under Jaiveer for about a year.
Neeraj Chopra made his international debut in 2013 at the World Youth Championships in Ukraine, where he won a silver medal with a throw of 76.79 meters. In 2014, he achieved a significant milestone by winning the gold medal at the Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China, with a throw of 86.48 meters. This victory was notable as it marked the first time an Indian athlete had won a gold medal in javelin throw at the Youth Olympics.
His success on the national and international stage caught the attention of the Indian Army, which decided to honor him by making him a Junior Commissioned Officer in 2017. Neeraj was appointed as a ‘Naib Subedar’ in the Rajputana Rifles. As part of his role in the Indian Army, he was selected for the ‘Mission Olympic Wing,’ a program aimed at identifying and training athletes in various sports disciplines for national and international competitions.
