Anup Kumar made his debut in international Kabaddi at the 2006 South Asian Games in Sri Lanka. He played a key role in the Indian national team’s successes. India won gold medals at the Asian Games in 2010 and 2014, and at the South Asian Games in 2016. In 2016, Kumar also led India to victory in the Kabaddi World Cup, a major achievement in his career. - 2015 Season: As captain, Kumar guided U Mumba to their first Pro Kabaddi title by beating Bengaluru Bulls in the final. He ended the season with 74 raid points.
- 2016 Season: U Mumba reached the finals again but lost to Patna Pirates by a small margin. Despite the loss, Kumar’s leadership was crucial in reaching the final.
- 2017 Season: Kumar stayed with U Mumba for a fifth season and became the first player in PKL to achieve 400 raid points.
In the 2018-19 season, Anup Kumar joined the Jaipur Pink Panthers, owned by Abhishek Bachchan, for 30 lakhs INR. Anup Kumar retired from Kabaddi on December 19, 2018, after a successful 15-year career. After retiring, he became a coach and took on the role of head coach for the Puneri Paltan team in PKL Season 7.
Anup Kumar was known for his special skills in bonus points, hand touch, and toe touch. He earned the nickname “Bonus ka Badshah” for his ability to score bonus points and “Captain Cool” for his calm leadership on the field. He is considered one of the best captains in Indian Kabaddi history.
