Arvind Kejriwal, born on August 16, 1968, is an Indian politician, activist, and former bureaucrat. He is the Chief Minister of Delhi, a position he has held since 2015 after his initial term from 2013 to 2014. Kejriwal is also the national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which he co-founded in 2012. He represents the New Delhi constituency in the Delhi Legislative Assembly, having served from 2013 to 2014 and again since 2015.
Before entering politics, Kejriwal was a mechanical engineer from IIT Kharagpur and worked in the Indian Revenue Service (IRS). In 2006, he was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award for his efforts in using right to information legislation to combat corruption. He later founded the Public Cause Research Foundation to promote transparent governance.
Kejriwal’s political journey began with his involvement in the Aam Aadmi Party. His party made headlines by winning a significant majority in the 2015 Delhi elections and again in the 2020 elections. AAP also achieved a major victory in the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections.
In March 2024, Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on allegations related to a liquor scam, becoming the first sitting chief minister in India to be arrested. His arrest was seen by some as politically motivated. Despite his arrest, he was granted interim bail in May 2024 to continue campaigning for elections. However, he faced further legal battles, including arrests by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and continued judicial custody until September 2024.
Born in Siwani, Haryana, Kejriwal grew up in various north Indian towns and was educated at Campus School in Hisar and Holy Child School in Sonipat. He graduated from IIT Kharagpur and worked for Tata Steel before joining the IRS. In 2010, he became active in anti-corruption protests and advocated for the establishment of a Lokpal (ombudsman) to address corruption.
During his first term as Chief Minister, Kejriwal’s government was marked by efforts to pass anti-corruption legislation, though he resigned after 49 days due to challenges in passing the bill. In his second term, he led AAP to a landslide victory in the 2015 elections and focused on issues like health care, including the establishment of Mohalla Clinics, and free public transportation for women. His third term, starting in February 2020, continued his focus on governance improvements, though it also faced various challenges and controversies.
Despite his legal troubles, Kejriwal remains a significant figure in Indian politics, known for his emphasis on anti-corruption and public welfare.
