Bhumi Pednekar was born on July 18, 1989, in Mumbai, India. She comes from a diverse background with Marathi and Haryanvi heritage. Her father, Satish Pednekar, was a former MLA and held positions as the Home and Labour Minister of Maharashtra. After his death from oral cancer, her mother, Sumitra Pednekar, became an anti-tobacco activist.

Bhumi attended Arya Vidya Mandir in Juhu for her schooling. When she was 15, her parents took out a loan to send her to Whistling Woods International to study acting. Unfortunately, she was expelled due to poor attendance. Despite this setback, Bhumi found a new path and joined Yash Raj Films as an assistant casting director. She worked there for six years under the guidance of Shanoo Sharma and was able to pay off the loan from her acting studies.

Bhumi Pednekar made her acting debut in 2015 with the film Dum Laga Ke Haisha, produced by Yash Raj Films and directed by Sharat Katariya. In the film, she played the role of an overweight wife opposite Ayushmann Khurrana. For this role, she gained about 12 kg to fit the character. Her performance was highly praised, with Rajeev Masand noting that she brought depth to her character without making her seem like a stereotype.

Following the film, Bhumi began losing weight and shared her journey on social media, offering tips and methods for others. Dum Laga Ke Haisha was a commercial success, won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, and earned Bhumi the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. That same year, she appeared in the four-part mini web series Man’s World by Y-Films, which explored gender inequality and premiered on YouTube.
