Tripathi was born on September 5, 1975, or 1976, in Belsand village, Bihar, India, to Pandit Benares Tiwari and Hemwanti Tiwari. His father was a farmer and Hindu priest. Tripathi originally had the last name Tiwari but changed it to Tripathi in school. He worked on the farm with his father until he was in the 11th grade and acted in local plays during festivals. After high school, he studied at the Institute of Hotel Management, Hajipur, before moving to Delhi to study at the National School of Drama, graduating in 2004.
Tripathi started his career in Mumbai with an uncredited role in “Chigurida Kanasu”(2003) and appeared in a Tata Tea ad. His early roles included parts in films like “Run” (2004), “Bunty Aur Babli” (2005), and “Raavan” (2010). He also appeared in TV series such as “Bahubali” and “Powder” (2010).
Tripathi’s lead role in “Gurgaon” (2017) was praised, though the film did not do well commercially. He then starred in successful films like “Bareilly Ki Barfi” (2017) and “Newton” (2017), which was India’s entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. He gained further acclaim with “Stree” (2018) and appeared in the Tamil film “Kaala” (2018). He continued to shine in roles in “Luka Chuppi” (2019), “The Tashkent Files” (2019), and “Super 30” (2019).
