Rahul Gandhi was born on June 19, 1970, in Delhi, India. He attended St. Columba’s School in Delhi before moving to The Doon School in Dehradun from 1981 to 1983. After the assassination of his grandmother, Indira Gandhi, for security reasons, Rahul and his sister Priyanka were educated at home. For his undergraduate studies, Rahul began at St. Stephen’s College in Delhi in 1989. However, he transferred to Harvard University in the United States after one year. Following the assassination of his father, Rajiv Gandhi, by the Tamil Tigers in 1991, Rahul was moved to Rollins College in Florida under the alias “Rahul Vinci” for security reasons. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree there in 1994. He later earned an MPhil degree from Trinity College, Cambridge, in England.
After finishing his studies, Rahul Gandhi worked with Monitor Group, a management consulting firm in London. He then returned to India and founded a technology outsourcing company called Backups Services Limited in Mumbai, where he served as a director.
Rahul Gandhi entered Indian politics in March 2004. He contested in the Amethi constituency in Uttar Pradesh, winning with a large majority of votes. On September 24, 2004, he was appointed General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee and took charge of the Indian National Student Union and the Indian Youth Congress. Under his leadership, both organizations grew rapidly. In the 2009 general elections, Rahul retained his seat in Amethi. In January 2013, he was named Vice President of the Indian National Congress. Throughout his political career, Rahul has been a strong advocate for the underprivileged and economically disadvantaged.
On May 11, 2011, Rahul Gandhi was arrested while supporting farmers who were protesting for compensation over land acquired for a highway project. He retained his Amethi seat in the 2014 general elections. In December 2017, he was appointed President of the Indian National Congress due to his dedication and efforts.
However, after the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, where the Congress party did not perform well, Rahul Gandhi resigned as Congress President on July 3, 2019.
