In 2010, Rajkummar Rao moved to Mumbai to pursue a film career and made his debut with the experimental film Love Sex Aur Dhokha. Though he started with brief roles, his career took a significant turn in 2013. That year, he gained recognition with his performance in the drama series Kai Po Che. Later, he starred in the biographical drama Shahid, where he played Shahid Azmi. This role earned him critical acclaim, including the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor and the National Film Award for Best Actor.
In 2014, Rajkummar Rao starred in the successful romantic comedy Queen alongside Kangana Ranaut. He continued to gain acclaim with films like CityLights (2014), Trapped (2016), and Aligarh (2016). His performances in these films won him the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor for a second time.
In 2015, he appeared in the romantic comedy Dolly Ki Doli and collaborated with Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan in Hamari Adhuri Kahani. Unfortunately, both films did not perform well commercially.
